I was now recalling
A story I heard when I was small
Of the Laika dog on Sputnik
What was its name again?
While I was gazing at your back
Finally, I realized
I would not see you again

Crouka, crouka
I go before you
Crouka, crouka
Surely you’ll come back

A chrome-colored capsule
Even though I truly love you
For the sake of what
Or why
I can no longer remember

Enough air and water for seven days
And someone’s strong wishes
The Laika dog on Sputnik
The door that will not open again is closed
How can I go on living
In a distant place unknown to you
How can we never have the same emotions

A chrome-colored capsule
Even though I love you like this
Even that dazzling time
Fades away into an unseen darkness

Crouka, crouka
I
Crouka, crouka
Surely

From the sky into the darkness
I am soaked up
Into an unseen darkness
Even that warm, snowy day is vanishing

A chrome-colored capsule
Even though I truly love you
For the sake of what
Or why
I can no longer remember

Notes: Sputnik II was the first spacecraft to carry a living animal into orbit, a dog named Laika (“Barker”).
“クローカ” is the Russian word for dog, собака or crouka.
The poem at the beginning is by Russian poet Yevgeny Yevtushenko. I could not find the original cyrillic for it, but a translation (from http://vagalecs.narod.ru/Yevtuz.htm) is:
“For with [his] death
He takes along with him:
First snow
First kiss
First battle”
